Must-read books about VEGANISM

Below is a list of books that I'd recommend to everyone who is vegan, plant-based or considering transitioning to a plant-based or vegan lifestyle. These books have been meaningful and pivotal in my journey towards becoming vegan. Most of them have been written by qualified medical doctors and are rich sources of knowledge.

  1. THE CHINA STUDY - T. Colin Campbell (PhD) & Thomas M. Campbell (MD)

The China Study examines the link between the consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and bowel cancer. The authors conclude that people who eat a predominantly whole-food, vegan diet—avoiding animal products as a main source of nutrition, including beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and milk, and reducing their intake of processed foods and refined carbohydrates—will escape, reduce, or reverse the development of numerous diseases. They write that "eating foods that contain any cholesterol above 0 mg is unhealthy."

2. HOW NOT TO DIE - Michael Greger (MD)

In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-recognized lecturer, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of death in America—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s, high blood pressure, and more—and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.

3. PROTEINAHOLIC - Garth Davis (MD) & Howard Jacobson (PhD)

In his groundbreaking book Proteinaholic, Dr. Garth Davis not only cites study after study showing that a whole-foods, plant-based diet can prevent and even reverse diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity and cancer; he also addresses those outlier studies that seem to contradict these findings, and he explains in layman's terms how YOU can tell the good studies from the bad ones.

4. HOW NOT TO DIET COOKBOOK - Michael Greger (MD)

Greger offers readers delicious yet healthy options that allow them to ditch the idea of "dieting" altogether. The How Not to Diet Cookbook is primed to be a revolutionary new addition to the cookbook industry: incredibly effective and designed for everyone looking to make changes to their dietary habits to improve their quality of life, weight loss notwithstanding.

5. NOT AS NATURE INTENDED - Rich Hardy

Relying on a hidden camera, a bluff and a little bit of luck, award-winning investigative journalist Rich Hardy finds imaginative ways to meet the people and industries responsible for the lives and deaths of the billions of animals used to feed, clothe and entertain us. What he discovers will shock, but it may just inspire you to re-evaluate your relationship with all animals and what role you let them play in your life. This one-of-a-kind perspective examines what it’s like to live and work amongst your adversaries and what you can achieve if you feel strongly enough about something.

6. ANIMALKIND - Ingrid Newkirk & Gene Stone, Mayim Bialik (PhD) (foreword)

In the last few decades, a wealth of new information has emerged about who animals are: astounding beings with intelligence, emotions, intricate communications networks, and myriad abilities. In Animalkind, Ingrid Newkirk and Gene Stone present these findings in a concise and awe-inspiring way, detailing a range of surprising discoveries, like that geese fall in love and stay with a partner for life, that fish “sing” underwater, and that elephants use their trunks to send subsonic signals, alerting other herds to danger miles away.

7. THE JOYFUL VEGAN - Colleen Patrick-Goodreau

Finding plant-based recipes? Easy. Dealing with the social, cultural, and emotional aspects of being vegan in a non-vegan world? That’s the hard part. The Joyful Vegan is here to help. In these pages, Colleen shares her wisdom for managing these challenges and arms readers—both vegan and plant-based—with solutions and strategies for “coming out vegan” to family, friends, and colleagues; cultivating healthy relationships (with vegans and non-vegans); communicating effectively; sharing enthusiasm without proselytizing; finding like-minded community; and experiencing peace of mind as a vegan in a non-vegan world.

By purchasing these books, you are allowing me to earn a small commission. In this way you are supporting both me and the vegan movement. Thank you! Happy reading :)
